We are not created to be God’s workhorses, but part of the overflow of love in the world.
When I heard that statement from a wise spiritual mentor many years ago, I was stopped in my tracks. I realized I had been a “workhorse” and I felt exhausted and depleted. I didn’t really know what it might mean for me to be intentionally part of the overflow of love in the world, but I was immensely attracted to the idea.
As I reflected on this beautiful thought, I realized I would have to come to know in my bones and the cells of my body, as well as in my mind and heart, that I was l loved. My religious faith taught me that we are all loved unconditionally by God and I believed this in my head, but I couldn’t get it to soak in. Instead I spent much of my life’s energy working hard outwardly to prove my worth to the world, seldom attending to my inner-self.
Today I am able to look back on a long and arduous inner journey from “workhorse to lover.” It did not happen without my own consent to the Spirit’s gentle invitations… to slowing down, to going inside, to self-awareness, to deep, wordless prayer, to vulnerability and inner healing. Along this path the Spirit connected me to many wise spiritual companions and the beautiful healing work of Gestalt Pastoral Care.
I write this to invite you on the deeper inner journey. Maybe you relate to the struggle of not being able to open to all the Love that is here for you. Many of us are injured along the path of life by traumatic events, great losses, and wounded, unhealthy parents. Shame and thoughts of unworthiness keep us closed to our original goodnes.. We do our best to survive and most of us are indeed resilient survivors.
HOWEVER, WE HAVE BEEN BROUGHT HERE FOR MORE THAN MERE SURVIVAL. EACH OF US IS NEEDED TO PLAY A PART IN GOD’S GREAT LOVE PROJECT FOR THE WORLD!
If there is a nudging somewhere in you for greater participation in
the Divine Life here and now, and you seem to be in a stuck place,
